Booth Fight-back Falls Short

Booth 2nds entertained Greetland on the first day of the 2009 season; winning the toss it was decided that Greetland would bat first, on what turned out to be an impeccable batting track.

The Greetland innings started steadily with the openers scoring at around 4 an over for the first 15, until Dave Oliver trapped Pidgeon LBW for 35. Unfortunately, this is when the pain began for Booth, the main tormentor being Iqbal; who, with 17 sixes bludgeoned his way to 133. It didn’t seem to matter where the ball pitched, or how fast it was travelling, it always needed to be collected from the surrounding fields, trees, road, bushes, as the sound leather on willow reverberated around Broadfold park.

Although Booth rallied to collect 7 wickets (and 2 bowling points), 3 of whom came from Finney, one with a corking ball which started on middle before cutting after and dislodging the off bail, a mammoth 315-7 had been posted by the visitors.

In reply Booth started positively with Johnstone (35), to the fore, until he was adjudged LBW. This brought Sutliffe to the wicket who took up the slack, quickly amassing 58, until he was dismissed, mistiming a lofted cover drive, with the score on 150-2. Booth then moved onto 180-3 and with last 12 overs remaining and full batting points pocketed, the hand break was lifted on the innings and the scoring commenced quick-sharp, with Wajid scoring a rapid 55, showing a great ability to time the ball and Collinge (108) completing his century. With 45 needed off 3 overs both batsmen were out in successive balls, to well taken catches on the boundary edge and with their dismissals, the impetus was taken from the innings and Booth finished short on a creditable 283-5.

Although, this wasn’t the start to the season they wanted, a lot of positives can be taken from the fight back in the second innings.
